How do I get from Liberia Airport (LIR) or San José (SJO) to Nosara?
+
Liberia Guanacaste Airport (LIR) is the closest international hub — about 2.5 hours (120 km) via Nicoya and Route 160. San José (SJO) is a 4.5 to 5.5 hour drive, or a 40-minute domestic flight on Sansa Airlines directly into Nosara Airport (NOB), located 10 minutes from Playa Guiones.
Do I need a 4x4 rental car or golf cart in Nosara?
+
If you are driving in from Liberia or San José, a high-clearance SUV or 4x4 is strongly recommended, especially during the green season (May–November) when roads around Ostional and Río Montaña can be muddy. Once inside Playa Guiones and Pelada, most visitors walk the jungle trails or rent a golf cart/quad for local errands.
When can I see the sea turtle arribadas at Ostional National Wildlife Refuge?
+
Solitary Olive Ridley and leatherback sea turtles nest at Ostional year-round, but the famous mass nesting events (arribadas) — when thousands of turtles arrive simultaneously over 3 to 5 days — peak during the green season from July through December, typically a few days before the new moon (around the last-quarter moon).
Can I walk onto Ostional Beach on my own during turtle nesting season?
+
No. Under Costa Rican wildlife law (SINAC), visitors may only enter the nesting sectors of Ostional National Wildlife Refuge with a certified local guide in small groups, strictly avoiding flashlights or white phone screens. Booking a guided Ostional tour arranges your accredited refuge guide and timed entry.
Is Playa Guiones good for beginner and family surfers?
+
Yes — Playa Guiones is widely considered one of the most consistent, beginner-friendly surf beaches in the world. It has a 7-kilometer flat sandy bottom (no sharp coral reef on the main break), forgiving whitewater reform waves on the inside for first-timers, and longer outside walls for intermediate surfers.
What is there to do in Nosara besides surfing and yoga?
+
Plenty: paddle kayaks or SUP boards through the Boca Nosara mangrove tunnels (5.00★), take the 2-hour traditional wood-stove cooking class near Sibu Sanctuary (4.99★, 159 reviews), ride ATVs into the Naranjal coffee mountains (4.98★), spot birds with a scope in the 85-acre Nosara Biological Reserve, or rappel Mala Noche waterfalls in green season.
Why are there no beachfront hotels or restaurants directly on the sand at Playa Guiones?
+
Playa Guiones is part of the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge buffer zone, which enforces a strict 200-meter strip of protected coastal forest between the high-tide line and any construction. You walk 2 to 4 minutes down shaded jungle paths to reach the sand, keeping the beach dark for nesting turtles and green for howler monkeys.
Should I stay in Playa Guiones, Playa Pelada, or Nosara Town?
+
Stay in Playa Guiones (North or Central) if you want to walk to surf lessons, yoga shalas, and cafés without driving. Stay in Playa Pelada for quieter coves, tide pools, and sunset dining at La Luna. Stay above Playa Nosara (like Lagarta Lodge) for panoramic river-and-ocean views beside the biological reserve.
Is there an ATM or bank in Playa Guiones?
+
There are a couple of private ATMs in Guiones (near Café de Paris and the mini-markets), and BCR / Banco Popular branches inland in Nosara town, but machines frequently run out of cash on holiday weekends. Bring ~$150–$250 in clean USD bills (nothing torn, no $50/$100 bills for small shops) and colones from the airport.
